How to use the ROI Calculator

  1. Enter the amount you originally invested, in US dollars.
  2. Enter the current or final value of that investment.
  3. Optionally, enter how many days you have held it.
  4. Read your net profit or loss, total ROI, and annualised return.

What ROI means

Return on investment (ROI) expresses your gain or loss as a percentage of the amount you put in. It lets you compare investments of different sizes on a like-for-like basis.

Total vs annualised return

Total ROI measures the whole gain over the holding period. Annualised ROI rescales that to a per-year rate, which makes investments held for different lengths of time easier to compare. Both are arithmetic only and exclude fees, taxes, and slippage.

Frequently asked questions

How is ROI calculated?

ROI is the net gain (final value minus amount invested) divided by the amount invested, expressed as a percentage.

What is annualised ROI?

It converts your total return into an equivalent yearly rate using the holding period you enter, so investments of different durations can be compared.

Does this include fees or taxes?

No. The result is a simple arithmetic return and does not account for trading fees, taxes, or slippage.
